Writers in Masks brings back a memory

Mercedes Yardley’s “Writers in Masks” feature has always piqued my interest, but this week’s post with Aaron Polson is really something.

It made me want to write about playing with pill bugs (or potato bugs, depending where you’re from) under logs, dealing with my grandfather’s death when I was four, carrying around a tin lunchbox full of Easter candy, and naming my female doll “Justin” because that somehow made sense at the time. That, and the taste of eating rubber superballs. Yup.

  1. We called them potato bugs, and I used to feed them to my plastic dinosaurs. I made crowns out of morning glory vines, collected cattails and pollywogs, and generally had an amazing time.

I think your tin lunchbox of Easter candy sounds wonderfully charming. :)

Ahh, yes. I miss cattails so much. Don’t have nearly as many in Tennessee.

      “Pollywogs”? Really?

I’ve heard the word before, but I don’t think I knew it referred to a plant. What kind is it? It’s always funny to me how different language can be in different area of even the same country.

Feeding bugs to dinosaurs is hysterical!

The Easter candy only made me sick. But it was a hell of a memory, of course. :)
